Gloucester Cathedral Nave

The choir stalls date from about 1350 and have three dimensional ogee - arched canopies and a series of fifty eight miserichords. The choir was restored by Sir Gilbert Scott in 1873.

Few of the carvings are of religious scenes, the majority depict domestic topics and mythological monsters. The tip-up seats gave some support to the monks when standing during very long services.

The photograph shows the floor which is covered in nineteenth century encaustic tiles and marble slabs.

The organ, designed by Thomas Harris, was rebuilt in 1920 and has a fine case from 1665, bearing the initials of Charles II.
