Fan Vaulting

Our photograph combines the splendour of the stained glass with
the delicate tracery of the cotswold stone fan vaulting. This area
is floodlit to illuminate the intricate and beautifully carved stone
work for which the Cathedral is justifiably famous.
The picture was taken in the south aisle near the main entrance
to the cathedral. The large window in the west end in this aisle,
and the first in the south wall are part of the reconstruction of
the west end by Abbot Morwent in 1430.
There are seven other windows, to the east of the door on the south
porch. Built around 1318, although the glass dates from the nineteenth
century.
