Roel Gate

The name Roel Gate is derived from the lost village of Roel, now
only Roel Farm which is situated a mile down the hill near Guiting
Power. The village was mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1087
as Rawelle, and it was still a small hamlet in 1828 when the Ordnance
Survey were preparing their first maps.
Roel Gate is a cross-roads on the Old Saltway, four miles north
east of Andoversford, and three miles south east of Winchcombe.
The nearest village is Hawling, which lies one mile to the south.
The photograph shows the rows of stubble which are a common sight
after the harvest all over the Cotswolds.
