Royal Crescent, Cheltenham

|
|
The Royal Crescent is the earliest of Cheltenham's Regency terraces
which have survived intact. It was built in several stages between
1805 and the early 1820's and provided expensive and quality lodgings
for those visiting the Spa.
The developer, Joseph Pitt, employed Charles Harcourt Masters,
a Bath architect. It was originally planned as two blocks of twelve
houses with a roadway between, but the design was later altered
to a single block of eighteen houses.
The photograph captures the beautiful curve of the crescent and
the wealth of ornamental ironwork for which the town is famous.
