The broad tree-lined promenade is Cheltenham’s best known avenue.

Established in 1817-18, it was designed as a carriage drive connecting the new Sherborne Spa with the High Street. From 1823 onwards a hotel and a number of detached and terraced houses were built along its length. Once known for its gentlemen's clubs, the Promenade is now famous for smart shops and cosmopolitan pavement cafes.

The photograph shows part of the war memorial and the Long Garden. The trees in our picture were felled shortly after the photograph was taken, and have since been replaced.
