This photograph shows the glorious autumn colour near Witcombe Roman Villa which is situated on the slopes of Coopers Hill with fine views in every direction. The Roman Villa was discovered by workmen digging up an ash tree and was excavated in 1818 and again in 1938. The villa dates from the end of the first century AD and was occupied and altered until the late fourth century AD.

There are a number of pavements the most interesting of which depicts fish and other sea creatures. Virtually all the rooms had plastered walls and eight of the rooms contained mosaics. The famous roman road, Ermin Street passes nearby.

Our view was taken from one of the many walks in this beautiful and historic countryside.
